This saw was recommended by This Old House. For woodworkers, handy men, trim carpenters, etc., the Makita is the one to pick. + for the Milwaukee.
This saw weighs 7 lbs. If you are a framing carpenter you might want the extra power of the Milwaukee. Their first choice was the Milwaukee, but they recommended this Makita for those who want a lighter saw.
Also it is a shade narrower. vs. 10 lbs.
But you will be sorry when you have to use it over your head. And now, the price: HALF the price of the Milwaukee.
easy to handle, adequate power. Adjustment sticky but accurate. Compact. Reasonable price. My second saw, chosen for portability & comfort in awkward situations( overhead & in place cuts). No dust chute and depth scale by sharpie. cord exits side of handle. Mine came with an extra blade.
I've owned this saw for about a year. If you use a circular saw only occasionally, or are looking for something for trim work, pick one of these up, a good 40t blade, and a straightedge. The difference in using this saw and either of those is akin to using a scalpel for surgery - or a machete.
The light weight really makes the 5740 helpful on those long extended reach cuts. I use this saw with a 40t freud avanti blade on MDF, plywood, etc for precision stuff. in that time it's built a staircase, a monster of a desk, installed laminate flooring, two subwoofer boxes, and a table among other things.
I shudder thinking about using those old saws in comparison.Notice that in addition to the light weight, this saw is only generating 10.5 amps, this is a readily noticeable trade off to a heavier, noisier saw. My dad actually owns the same saw, before the Makita he had a cheap-o skilsaw and I had an ANCIENT (1960's). Craftsman.
It cuts 2X lumber no problem, but it's not really a framing saw. It's a great saw at a really good price.
Only use occasionally for light weight projects and it performs well, mainly bought for its weight.
Incredible how easy it goes through 2x4's and 2x6's. Excellent Saw. Light weight, very easy to handle, quiet and powerful. Wish the case was not plastic but I guess most saws come that way these days. Other then that, I highly recommend it.
